  • Proofreaders [OPEN]

Are grammar, spelling and punctuation your best friends? Are you fluent in English, and are you a grammar police?

Then this is the job for you!

Proofreaders must check for and correct all errors in grammar and spelling from the translated English script. They also need to match the bubbles with the text to make sure the translator has not missed any bubble.

Please, before starting the test READ THIS GUIDE!

The "Manga" Proofreader test you can download below:

    Spoiler
In this spoiler you will find a one-line test for yourself!
I went to beach yesterday. I meet a boy there.
(If a spelling mistake is the only change you deem necessary in the above line, then please do not apply to our group.)

If the above link does not work, try this one: here

Send your application to joinegs[at]gmail.com and you'll hear from us as soon as possible! (within 3-7 days)

The proofreaders have a deadline of 1-3 days to deliver their proofread script.
We are a HQ and speedy group and we would like to release our projects on a regular basis :)

    IMPORTANT:
Please have this as the Subject of your application email:
[APPLICATION] -Manga Proofreader- your nick or
    [APPLICATION] -Novel Proofreader- your nick
Whichever position you're applying for. You may apply for both, in which case, make it
[APPLICATION] -Manga & Novel Proofreader- your nick

And include the following info that we would like to know about you in your application:

    Manga interests?
What kind of projects you generally like to work with and if there is anything you don't like doing. (Seinen /shounen /shoujo?)

    A specific manga interest?
Are there any specific EGS projects that you would like to work on? If yes, please tell us which one(s).

    Are you reliable?
Can we count on you to deliver the project that will be assigned to you or is it in your character to disappear while it's half done?

    Nickname?
The nickname you would like your work to be credited to.

Are you in any other group(s)? If yes, which one(s)?
If you have previous experience in manga proofreading, you MIGHT be able to skip the test if you show us samples of your previous works.

Why would you like to join Easy Going Scans?
Tell us a bit about yourself, where you're from, why you chose our group to apply for this position, and how you came across our group
This makes it easier for us to know exactly what you're interested in doing for us, and will make it faster for YOU to receive a reply!

Note: Remember to attach the PR TEST to your email <------

    Also Important:
The downloaded files are .rar archives, so you will need a program to open such files, e.g. as winrar or 7-zip for windows, or unrarx for mac.

    -----------------------------------------------------
We would like to let everyone interested know that we are a nice and warm group with all sorts of “Easy Going” people.

We are looking for more staff atm, but we are only looking for reliable and trustworthy individuals who might be willing to work with us in the long term.
So if you can see yourself in this description, we would love to have you as long as you pass our test and the trial period.

Note that Easy Going scans is a NON profitable group so all the staff are doing volunteer (i.e. unpaid) work. We do it by the fans for the fans!

To become a full member at EGS you must pass a trial period of 3-5 chapters. Those chapters will be from our actual series. They will be released and you will be credited for them, unless your work is completely unusable.

EGS full members have complete access to our FTP and can read ahead every project they want.

Also, we would like anyone who apply to us to check their mail at least ONCE PER DAY or frequent our IRC regularly, so it would be highly appreciated if an applicant who is unfamiliar with IRC is willing to learn how to use it.

We'll give a reply to anyone who e-mails us whether he/she passes the test or not.

    Thank you all.

    Re: Proofreaders [OPEN]

We are currently looking for a few more well-versed, efficient proofreaders to help us as our projects keep increasing. Proofreading experience is NOT required, but can be a pre.

If you're interested, send your application to joinegs at gmail dot com

      Re: Proofreaders [OPEN]

You are suppose to check only the english script and correct the mistakes.

And when you are done only send us back the corrected script.

Read the instructions inside the script please~

        Re: Proofreaders [OPEN]

Or go with Libre Office which is the open-source fork of Open Office that's not managed by Oracle. I mean, if you're going to install a free product, might as well go with the one managed by the community and bound to improve with time.

        Sorry. Geek moment.

            Re: Proofreaders [OPEN]

To open the test and all the raws in our group and also all the other scanlation groups out there you need to have winzip or winrar
Winrar is a free program you could download here

Just a few questions before I start looking through the test.

"Leave the translation intact and add a new line below it highlighting it with blue which will be your correction to the translator’s writings."
Do we just copy the part that is wrong (say one section of a sentence) or the whole line? As I'll probably nitpick at one word I feel doesn't fit in and copying the whole line gives a lot more to read through for you guys.

Also, do we need to highlight/add new lines for when we remove these -> ~?

You copy the entire sentence and then do your fix and then change the font's color to something else. (I'm used to seeing them done in blue) The reason for that is that typesetters are supposed to copy-paste the entire line.

Possible proofreaders that send us an email withough the proofreading test attached or with misspelling on the word "proofreader" will not receive a reply ~

                  Thank you ~

                      Hi, newb here.

I'm new to this kind of editing, so I'd like a little clarification on the test.

To what extent should I be modifying the text? Do I just focus on grammar, spelling and punctuation? Should I be re-structuring or re-writing the sentences to help the dialogue flow along? Should I reorganize the dialogue to fit the bubbles more easily, and make it easier on the typesetter? I'd just like to know exactly what the title 'proofreader' implies.
                      We're forced to bed,
                      But we're free to dream.

It's all what you mention above actually. Flow is as much important as grammar and spelling.

And yes keep in mind that typesetters will just copy paste whatever line is in blue

Is this still open? I believe the topic on the home page said they wanted Proofreaders to be done in 1-3 days and I believe it is past then. I will give it a try if it is still open. If so, I have one question; can proofreaders reword the sentence completely where it makes more sense in English?

                            -Thanks
